There are many Group One Races across the World. Grade One Races are the pinnacle of the Horse racing world, with only the elite of the elite contest. Many of these Grade One Races are universally known, whether a Sprint Race (five or six furlongs) or a Distance Race, over eight furlongs or more. However, not many are run over seven furlongs, as this is considered an in-between distance, not a Sprint, and not a distance race. There are a couple, though, with the Dewhurst Stakes being one of them. It is a Group one flat horse race open to two-year-old colts and fillies. It is run every year in October on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket over seven furlongs and is one of the most prestigious races for young horses in the UK. Are Seven Furlongs a Sprint - It is an age-old question. It is a horse race over seven furlongs or 1400m, regarded as a sprint or a distance race. We all know that races over five and six furlongs are sprints, and over eight furlongs are considered distance races. You could receive different answers to your question depending on where you are in the World. In the USA, horse racing aficionados will tell you that it is a Sprint, and in the United Kingdom, Australia and South Africa, it is regarded as a specialist distance; not a sprint, and not yet a middle distance race. How Far is a Furlong How far must a horse go to travel one furlong? Actually, not that far. A furlong is 220 yards, 660 feet, or roughly 201.17 meters. More crucially, a furlong is one-eighth of a mile, which aligns it with the other standard measurement used to measure horse races across the globe. In horse racing in the United Kingdom and Ireland, the word furlong, along with miles and yards, is used as a distance metric. The term furlong may be confusing since it is no longer generally used outside British and Irish racing, with other nations preferring meters or simply miles and fractions of miles. A furlong equals 220 yards in the British Imperial system of measurement. Furlong – The Origin of the Word It is derived from two ancient English terms, 'forth' and 'lang,' which imply furrow and length, respectively. These are the lengths of furrows or trenches dug on fields in the distant past. An English furlong was defined as the length of a trench over one acre of land, equivalent to six hundred and sixty feet. This was the maximum Distance an ox team could pull a plow without stopping. Unlike other ancient English terms, including its sister measuring unit, the rod, the term furlong survived into the modern age, with only the 'a' replaced by an 'o' to arrive at the contemporary furlong. In the distant past, the furlong was a standard unit of measurement in agriculture, and it was eventually transported to many English colonies, where it was used for land surveys. The furlong was used as a unit of measurement in the United Kingdom and Ireland until the Weights and Measures Act of 1985 discontinued its use. The furlong has been used as a measure of length in horse racing since the 16th century, when the sport was first established in England. Furlong – In Todays Horse Racing Terms Today, the term furlong is used to describe average race distances in both flat and National Hunt horse racing in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Five furlongs is the minimum length for a flat sprint; six furlongs is a regular sprint distance in flat racing, and seven furlongs is a preferred distance for flat juveniles being trained to be milers. 1 mile 1 furlong - a distance used to evaluate milers over a somewhat longer distance.1 mile 2 furlongs - an intermediate distance that allows milers to compete against middle distance specialists.1 mile 3 furlongs – a medium distance race style typically used to evaluate middle distance fillies.1 mile 4 furlongs - the usual intermediate Distance in flat racing 6 furlongs is a stayers distance in flat racing that is sometimes attempted by middle distance racehorses. The Seven Furlong Race – Always good to Watch Whether the seven-furlong race is a Group One Race or not, it is always a pointer to where the winner will be aimed as the season continues. If it is a Juvenile Race, that horse will be transitioning to running longer distances, and the seven furlongs are a stepping stone from the sprint distances of five and six furlongs to the longer distances. Whether the horse will be good enough to run in those distance Group Ones will be shown by how well the horse copes with the seven-furlong race. For older horses, the seven-furlong race will be available because that horse prefers the specialist Distance and runs their best races over the Distance. Usually, these races will be for horses with a reasonably high rating, and they have proven that they prefer the seven furlongs to the sprints or Middle distance races. Then, of course, there is the race that every owner, trainer and jockey wants to win, the Grade One. If the trainer believes that the Juvenile in their Yard is forward enough to contest a race like the Dewhurst Stakes, that trainer will plot the course of the horse to culminate in being able to run their best race in the Grade One. The trainer, in conjunction with the stable jockey and the owner, will position their horse, study the National Horseracing Authority's horse racing calendar for the season, and carefully pick the races which will enable their charge to qualify for, and run in, the Dewhurst Stakes. To win it will be every owner's ambition. The Seven Furlong Race – Integral to the Horse Racing Calendar Whether a trainer has an up-and-coming juvenile in the stable, a battle-hardened veteran or a potential Grade One Winner, the seven-furlong race will be integral to the success of these horses as the Racing Season runs its course. It might not be a Sprint or a Distance Race, but it is a specialist distance with an integral place in the Calendar.
